Triton have recently released their handheld power planer, and I have been using it for my renovation work and in the workshop. Let's see what it offers and how it performed for me... BOSCH PSR 9.6 VE battery

Firstly, you will instantly recognize that familiar Triton color if you have seen or used Triton tools before. The design of the planer itself is somewhat unremarkable in the sense that it follows the traditional design and shape of most common handheld power planers, however, there are some subtle differences. Planing depth is adjusted via the depth adjustment knob located on the front of the tool. BOSCH GBM 12VES-2 battery When this knob is turned, the height of the front base of the tool is changed. It is lifted up to provide the depth offset to make a depth planing pass in relation to the rear base, which is fixed at the same height as the cutter blade tips. So, only the front section of the base before the blades moves when depth adjustment is changed. This is the standard method of depth control used on most power planers. Now, the depth settings are really only a guide. Don't take them as gospel, because with most handheld power planers, the settings are rarely very accurate. This is the same on the Triton model. So just take the settings as marked as a rough guide, and if you require precision planing, choose an alternative measuring method to ensure accuracy. Thankfully though, both front and rear bases do appear to be parallel to each other, and each base is, for all intensive purposes, as flat as they need to be for this type of tool. In terms of power, the Triton planer features a 720W motor. This is more than enough for most planing tasks. BOSCH GSB 12VSP-2 battery Sure, you can bog it down somewhat attempting a full 2mm depth cut in dense hardwood when planing at the maximum 82mm in one pass, but trying to cut that deep in hardwood with maximum width is not really advisable to begin with anyway, even if your planer had twice the power. In fact, I never take more than 1mm per pass in hardwood on my 3HP thicknesser! BOSCH GSR 12V battery

Plus, planning deep in a single pass, particularly in hardwood, doesn't produce a very clean finish. Smaller, BOSCH GSR 12VES-3 battery successive passes of 0.5mm or less in hardwood saves the tool, saves the blades and gives you a better finish. I was testing 2mm passes in softwood at about 40mm width and it did the job, despite being showered in plenty of shavings and debris! So take smaller depth cuts per pass, and a few more of them to guarantee good results, and you wont be straining the motor either. A belt drive system transfers the motor power to the cutterhead. The cutterhead houses two 82mm, reversible TCT plane blades. These rotate at 17,000 RPM (no load), BOSCH GSR 12VET battery so there are potentially up to 32,000 blade passes on your material per minute. At this rate, a clean, smooth finish is attainable on the planed surface. Maintain sharp blades and you will have no problems at all. And of course, when the blades dull, simply reverse them to expose a new sharp edge again! The blades themselves appear to be very generic in design, so sourcing replacements shouldn't be a problem, even if Triton-branded blades are not available. There should be no problem with matching other branded 82mm TCT blades if you cannot source Triton ones, so you won't be left out in the cold at any stage in the future with dull blades and no replacements to be found on the planet! Blades are secured via three clamping screws/nuts which hold each blade in position. A wrench to tighten/release these screws is stored onboard the planer, just behind the belt drive cover. You wont lose it at least when it can be stored directly on the tool. BOSCH GSR 12VPE-2 battery

The Triton planer not only planes flat surfaces, but it can also create rebates up to 8mm deep. To ensure consistent depth accuracy, a depth stop guide is included which is adjustable to a maximum depth of 8mm. Additionally, a parallel guide fence (included) can be added to the planer to ensure a parallel rebate to an edge. These two fence/stop additions allow the user to create rebates with the power planer with good accuracy. Certainly as accurate as they need to be for carpentry or even cabinetry purposes (with a little practice). BOSCH GSR 12VSH-2 battery

The front base features a V-groove designed to cut chamfers on the edge of boards. The corner of a board or length of material sits in the groove with the planer tilted to a 45 degree angle. It quickly removes a sharp corner with ease. This is useful to either protect edges from chipping, or to remove a sharp edge for comfort or safety reasons, depending on the project in question. It's not a commercial machine, but it's not priced at a commercial level either, and for what some hire companies charge you to rent out a tile saw for a couple days, you could buy your very own GMC LSTSAW tile saw to keep and use for as long as you want. Sure, the saw is not absolutely perfect, and I have mentioned some minor issues in the text above, but in the end, I found it achieved the task it is designed to do; to cut tiles quickly and easily with good accuracy. Global Machinery Company (GMC) are currently experiencing some extraordinary growth in the power tool market worldwide, thanks to a line of tools offered that are suited to the budget conscious, re-modeler, or DIY enthusiast. Originally, the company offered a basic line of tools but has since been on a steady curve upwards in bringing to the market some better quality tools with some unique features, as well as a line of tools better suited to the commercial and trade sector. The company recently released two new sliding compound miter saws, and we thought we would take a look a look at these and see how well they perform in common woodworking tasks... DEWALT DW907Z battery

We looked at two models, the LSMS210 and LSMS250. Essentially, apart from the size and motor specs, DEWALT DW915 (Flash Light) battery both saws have the same features and build design, so we will review them together and highlight any differences between the two models as we go. Note that the models reviewed are wired for Australian power supply, so power specs may be different if this model is, or does become available outside of Australia. We used the saws on a folding miter saw stand which we reviewed previously on the site (this is not included with the miter saw purchase of course). DEWALT DW912 battery

As we can see from the table above, there is a difference of 800 W of power between the LSMS210 (8 1/4" saw) and the LSMS250 (10" saw), DEWALT DW917 (Flash Light) battery the horsepower for the 250 being larger because it sports a larger blade, and because it can cut thicker stock due to its larger cut capacity (70mm vs 50mm for non-beveled cuts). In both cases, the saw is powerful enough to cut to its maximum capacity, so we had no problems with lack of power from either tool. No load speeds are pretty much average in comparison to other tools, and perhaps the only major consideration with this spec is to ensure any blades you buy for the saw are rated to run safely at the indicated saw RPM figure. Naturally, larger blades do cost more money, so you will have to factor overall saw size into the equation if you decided to purchase either of these models. First determine the maximum cut depth and width you will need for the majority of your projects and see if the smaller saw will meet those needs. If not you need to go for something larger. Warranty
I will make note at this point that both saw models come with a full 2-year replacement warranty for both home and commercial / trade use! Many other tools in the GMC range (aside from their platinum series) are only covered for home use, but both these models are also good for warranty claims with commercial and trade use as well. GMC are also very good with warranty claims, and do offer a 30-day satisfaction guarantee with all their tools, so both items offer a "risk-free" purchase option. DEWALT DW924K2AR battery

The Blades...
One thing that may stick out more than anything else in the spec list above is the blade. DEWALT DW924K2B2 battery Both saws are fitted with a 24 tooth TCT blade. I am not sure why this was done. Perhaps to keep the cost down, but a 24 tooth blade is far from ideal for cross cutting tasks on a miter saw. It is pretty much a rip blade, and to get good results from your cuts, you will need something with a little more teeth. I'd recommend a 60 tooth blade as minimum, and one designed for use with miter saws if you are serious about good cut quality. DEWALT DW924K2B3 battery

You should also factor a replacement blade into the tool price, because, DEWALT DW924K2BR battery in my opinion, you will need it, unless all you plan to cut is rough lumber or make cuts where cut quality is not important or relevant. The blade supplied is not a terrible blade as such, it just doesn't have the number of teeth you need for fine cross-cutting work. It can be used for rough carpentry or framing cutting successfully however. If you decide to use the included blade, be aware that the outer egde and teeth are painted, and a few quick cuts through some scrap material might be required to remove the paint from the blade's teeth so the sharpness of the teeth underneath is exposed. The first few cuts are pretty rough, but once that paint has worn off, cut quality does improve markedly. DEWALT DW927K battery

Sliding Miter Saw
Both the LSMS 210 and 250 models are sliding miter saws. The head slides forward and back on metals bars to essentially allow a wider/longer cut to be made. This is very handy if you work with pre-dimensioned timber or boards with widths that fall under the maximum cutting capacities listed above. The sliding mechanism allows you to cut boards up to this width, whereas a fixed (non-sliding) miter saw's width cutting capacity is much less. DEWALT DW927K-2 battery

The good thing about these saws is that you can still use them in fixed mode by locking the sliding mechanism. It's the best of both worlds really. Sliding miter saws are usually more expensive as a result however, but as we will find out later, GMC retails these sliding saws at an attractive price. DEWALT DW927K2 battery

If you look around at different sliding miter saws, you will find models with either one slide bar or two slide bars. In almost all cases, two slide bars or dual-sliders are more accurate and offer smoother travel than a single slide saw. I have owned a Ryobi single slide bar saw in the past, and while it was a very good saw and gave me great service, the single bar slide mechanism was not overly smooth throughout it's entire range; it had a 'sticky' point toward the end of its range that didn't allow for smooth saw travel throughout the entire movement range. Both the two GMC models tested here feature dual sliding bars. DEWALT DW927KV-2 battery

You can see the bars and their position on the saw in the accompanying photos. Their accuracy is determined in part by the tolerances of machining of the bar and the slots they ride within, and the smooth travel dictated by the ball bearings they slide on. I can say that I was pleasantly surprised with the smooth travel of the saw head throughout the entire range of motion on both models tested. I had expected worse, but they are actually quite smooth. I'll fall short of comparing them to the slide action on the Makita LS1013 (considered to be one of the best sliding miter saws in recent history), but they will certainly give you a pretty smooth and accurate cut with good tool technique. Having dual bars is a great aid in keeping the blade aligned as you move the saw head, as well as distributing the saw head weight and load across two bars, as opposed to one, which may have been the reason my old Ryobi saw did have trouble in a small section of its slide range. A yellow turn knob behind the head of the saw on the slide rail casing allows you to lock the sliding feature so you can use the tool just like a fixed, non-sliding saw. DEWALT DW940K battery

Operating Handle & Blade Guard
GMC, in my opinion, have made a good choice with incorporating the horizontal D-handle type design on both saw models. DEWALT DW940K-2 battery I first used this design on a Bosch miter saw and found I favored it almost immediately. Some claim these handle types are more prone to side deflection by the user, but I have never had a problem. I find this much more ergonomic and easier to drop the head of the saw and control the slide action than other types of handles. Your mileage may vary of course. The rubber over-mold grip helps keep your hand from slipping during use - this is a feature we would expect to see on all saws these days. If you take a look at the close-up photo of the handle we have displayed in the right hand column, you will see a number of yellow controls. DEWALT DW953 battery

The one on the far left is the blade guard release "button". When you push this in, DEWALT DW953K battery the stop preventing the blade guard from opening as you lower the saw head is moved out of the way and the blade cover is free to pivot and you can safely lower the saw head to make a cut. The blade guard, which is constructed of rigid, clear plastic virtually covers the entire blade constantly as the saw head is lowered, helping protect your hands and fingers from coming close to or touching the blade. Without releasing the blade guard stop, you cannot lower the saw head and make a cut. It's a fairly standard feature on just about every miter saw available. It is well-positioned if you are operating the saw via the handle with your right hand. Unfortunately, if you operate the handle with your left hand, the handle itself and controls are not as easily used. The handle is really designed for right hand use primarily. Under the rubber grip you can see the power button. Nothing fancy here, just push it in to power up the saw and release it to power down the saw. On the right lateral side of the handle is a small round yellow push button. This is the power on/off button for the "Redeye" laser line generator that is fitted to the saw... "Redeye" Laser Generator
GMC have managed to put a laser on just about every tool imaginable it seems. DEWALT DW953KS-2 battery Some tools certainly can benefit from them, others might not be as useful. A laser on a miter saw can be helpful, assuming it is accurate. The laser on both models tested features dual lines, that is, two individual laser lines are generated from the laser unit fitted behind the blade just below the head spring (see photos). Each line is intended to project the cutting line for each side of the blade, so in theory, you can get a good idea of where the blade will cut no matter which side of the blade you wish to use for material alignment. The ability to power up (or power down) the laser independent of the rest of the tool is a good safety feature. Other methods of generating a laser line can require the blade to be powered up and spinning before the laser will switch on. The laser is also powered via the mains power, so no batteries or power packs to contend with. DEWALT DW953KV-2 battery

The primary issue with adding lasers to tools is the user's ability to see the laser lines in bright, outdoor environments. Unfortunately, the laser on these models suffers that same problem. In bright light, it is very difficult to see. It is easier to see if weather conditions are overcast, or if you work in a shed or workshop with artificial light sources - these are generally not as bright or have as much glare as natural sunlight. So outdoors in bright light, the laser becomes somewhat ineffective, but it is quite visible and much more effective indoors, even under moderate artificial light. DEWALT DW953RFK2 battery

One thing I do like about this laser generator is that it is fixed to the lower body of the tool, independent of the saw head, DEWALT DW965 battery so even as you lower the saw head, that laser line position does not change and remains fixed. The laser lines do move with forward back slide motion accordingly, but your alignment should have already been completed before this action takes place, and regardless, they dont really move off track anyway. Additionally, the laser lines are adjustable to accommodate different blade kerf widths, or if you wish to fine-tune the laser's position for greater accuracy. The lasers are factory set out of the box, but even so, I found a little adjustment was in order. The beams are fairly narrow, but there is still a little ambiguity to them in that they are not ultra-sharp with sharp beam edges. However, I found that by adjusting the laser so the outer edge of each laser line marked the actual blade cut line on each side delivered the best result, plus your pencil-marked cut line on your material is then not obscured or "hidden" under the laser line itself. Even at bevel angles the laser line retains accuracy well, although it is most accurate when using the saw in the upright 90 degree, non-beveled position. DEWALT DW965K battery

The compressor has a six litre air storage tank. You can't really see this because it is enclosed within the plastic shell housing on the outside. This housing is also useful as it protects the user from touching hot metal parts of the tool, and those compressor cooling fins and pipes can get very hot as the compressor operates. The unit is about the size of a small suitcase and its rectangular shape takes up less room in the back of the van, ute, or in the workshop for storage. It measures 525mm (L) x 285mm (W) x 455mm (H). The compressor motor assembly is also wrapped in this shell and it is a direct drive, fan-cooled unit, DEWALT DC745KB battery as opposed to a belt-driven model. Direct drive are also generally a little louder in operation. It is rated at 1.5Hp or 1100W. Generally the motor rating is paired to the size of the storage tank. The larger the tank, the larger the motor to keep it filled adequately and up to pressure. The 100W motor is more than adequate for this size tank. It has a pump displacement of 5.2 CFM (cubic feet per minute) but the continuous air supply is rated at 2.5 CFM. DEWALT DC756KA battery

This figure is quite important because it will determine what type of air tools can be used satisfactorily with the compressor. For example, some air tools, like air sanders or die grinders use a continuous supply of air as they are operated. For these tools a larger CFM rating is needed, DEWALT DC756KB battery otherwise the air supply in the tank and that delivered by the pump cannot match that consumed by the air tool, and so the tank drains quickly and the pump cannot keep up, allowing the tank pressure to fall to levels not suitable for the correct tool operation. On the other hand, air tools like pop riveters and nail guns use air in short bursts, and as a result, DEWALT DC840KB battery the compressor has time to catch up when tank pressure/air capacity falls. There are also air tools like airbrushes, which do use a continuous flow of air, but because the volume of air is much lower than larger spray guns, smaller compressors will happily keep up with their air requirements. Remember too that it is possible to use a small compressor to power a spray gun or a sander or air grinder. You just can't expect to use that air tool continuously and must use it in short bursts with pauses in between to allow the compressor to catch up. You will find most high volume air tool users will have a large compressor because running high demand air tools on small compressors can get frustrating rather quickly. DEWALT DC841KA battery

If you are unsure of what size compressor to buy, let the CFM requirement of your tools be your guide, ensuring you check the CFM of the air tool which will use the most air. Most air tools will have listed a recommended CFM figure for best use. Match your compressor's CFM output to this maximum CFM figure to determine what size unit to buy. And remember to look for the "Free Air Delivery" CFM figure, and not the pump displacement, because as you can see from the figures on this compressor reviewed here, there is a large difference between the numbers! So, with this unit having a Free Air Delivery of 2.5 CFM, there are definitely going to be some limitations on its use. DEWALT DC845KB battery It will happily power virtually any size air nailer with no problem. It will cycle the motor more often but it will keep up in almost all nailing applications. It will happily run air inflation devices like tire or ball inflators. There is more than enough capacity and air flow there. DEWALT DC940KA battery

Airbrushes are no problem either, and I have run die grinders and an air sander on it just fine, but in shorter bursts with pauses in between. High volume air spray guns can be a bit of a problem because you usually need to spray fairly continuously to do the job properly. I have sprayed nitro-cellulose finishes using this compressor and a touch up gun just fine on smaller woodworking projects though. So it's not going to be perfect for every task, but its certainly capable for most DIY or small scale woodworking/metalworking or workshop cleanup tasks, and that is the market it is aimed at, and priced at too DEWALT DC945KB battery

Back to the features... The main ON/OFF button is located just forward of the handle to turn the motor ON or OFF. The compressor will automatically switch on when the tank pressure is below 85 PSI (pounds per square inch) and automatically cut out at 115 PSI. The upper limit is a safety cutout feature to ensure tank pressure does not exceed the tank's rating. The lower 85 PSI cut-in pressure ensures the tank retains a pressure of between 85 PSI and the 115 PSI cutout pressure. There is a tank pressure gauge on the left side of the main control panel of the compressor. DEWALT DC980KA battery

You will find that most air tools will have a functional pressure range of between 80 and 120 PSI. DEWALT DC980KB battery For air tools that have a maximum 100 PSI rating, the air supply from the compressor will need to be regulated down to 100 PSI. This can be done via use of the onboard regulator knob (large yellow knob, center on control panel) and regulated air pressure gauge (right side of control panel). DEWALT DC981KA battery

You can set virtually any pressure air supply needed, even if the tank pressure is 115 PSI. DEWALT DC981KB battery The regulator knob adjusts the pressure downstream of the actual regulator, and hence can have a different pressure than the tank pressure. To regulate the air pressure, there needs to be air flowing for this to be achieved. You can simply hook up an air blower or other device (except nail guns or intermittent use air tools) and allow the air to flow. While the air is flowing from the tool, turn the regulator knob either way to raise or lower the pressure to the air tool. DEWALT DC981KZ battery

Once this is done you should have a consistent flow of air at the regulated pressure you have set. DEWALT DCD910KX battery Note that if you set a max pressure of, say, 90 PSI, the Tank pressure must be above that figure to guarantee supply. The tank pressure can never be lower than the regulated air pressure at any given time. Simple logic there and this is the same with any air compressor. DEWALT DCD940B2 battery

It is a good idea, when setting a specific regulated air pressure, DEWALT DCD945B2 battery to start by opening the flow of air to the tool, then reduce the regulated pressure down to 0 PSI. Then slowly raise the pressure to your desired setting indicated on the regulated air pressure gauge (right side of the control panel). This way the downstream air pressure setting is more stable and consistent. You can find that if regulating in an opposite manner, from high pressure down to low pressure, that the regulated pressure does not maintain its setting consistently, or rises again to match tank pressure. So be sure to lower output pressure to 0 first then slowly raise it via the regulator knob to the max pressure desired. DEWALT DCDK12 battery

The compressor has the safety cutout valve also located on the control panel. This operates automatically but should be checked occasionally to ensure it hasn't become stuck. You can check it by pulling on the ring outwards to make sure it isn't sticking. A stuck valve can mean the compressor's pressure can exceed maximum safety limits. Thankfully this rarely happens but a regular check of the valve's function will ensure safe ongoing use. DEWALT DW051K battery

The remaining outlet on the control panel is the actual air outlet. This is a 1/4" Nitto style outlet for hooking up your air hose to transport the compressed air to your air tool.On the underside of the unit is the tank drain valve. This is used to drain moisture from the tank that forms and accumulates as air is compressed and stored. The more humid or warm the outside air, the more water is created in the process. The drain valve should be released, ideally, after the end of each day's use. You might only remember to drain the tank once a week, and that is probably ok, but I wouldn't let water sit in the tank for any longer. It can rust the insides of the tank and cause problems later. DEWALT DW052K battery This seems a hotly debated topic. Some compressor owners rarely empty their tanks and have reported no problems with corrosion, but why risk it? Empty it as often as you remember. Make it a part of your routine when you shut off the compressor after each use. Soon it will become habit! DEWALT DW052K-2 battery

Because this drain is attached directly to the compressed air tank, if the tank is full of air, DEWALT DW052K2H battery when you release the drain (by screwing the nut inwards toward the tank), compressed air will be released. As a safety precaution, you should drain excess amounts of air from the tank before releasing the drain screw. It is probably not a bad idea to leave maybe 20-30 PSI of air in the tank when you release the screw because the remaining air rushing to escape the tank via the drain will help move moisture toward the drain hole. Just remember that when you go to use the compressor again that the drain valve is re-engaged, by screwing it outward from the tank until it seats, otherwise your tank will never fill completely and your motor will be working overtime, and probably overheat. Thankfully the sound of escaping air is a good identifier that you have forgotten to close the drain! DEWALT DW052Z battery

The only notable feature on the rear of the unit, apart from the cooling air fins in the housing are power cord storage "rings" to wrap the power cord around.A printed user manual should see you through any required setup (although its pretty much ready to go out of the box) and any troubleshooting, should you need to do any... we haven't had to yet, touch wood! In Use
Since I have a larger compressor in my shop already, this smaller unit finds use wherever I need to undertake smaller scale work around the home (when portability becomes important). I use it mostly for all my trim installation work along with my brad nailer and finish nailer, DEWALT DW053K2H battery and for these it works very well and the portability makes it rather user friendly. It happily runs my large framing nailer too and will keep up without a problem (although I am not driving nails constantly every second or two). Nonetheless it does perform my frame nailing tasks with zero problems. It powers my model airbrush for painting scale models (my other hobby) and neatly slots under my hobby desk out of the way. Because of its operating noise when the motor is underway filling the tank, I can't really operate it in the middle of the night with the young ones asleep upstairs however. But as long as I fill the tank before the sun goes down and have the regulated pressure set, I usually have enough air to last an airbrush painting session. DEWALT DW904(Flash Light) battery

Use: While turning a piece with both eye and head protection I must admit I felt very secure wearing the respirator. Breathing the fresh air was an added bonus. There was a little distortion of my peripheral vision caused by the bubble face shield but looking straight on was fine. DEWALT DC727VA battery I had just begun turning some spindles for a cradle and things were progressing well. I had 35 of these to turn. About an hour and a half into the session my neck was getting stiff...the weight of the respirator the culprit. Standing relatively still with my head in about the same position spindle after spindle was taking it's toll. Working around the rest of the shop was much better. I was able to perform all sorts of other tasks without a problem. Again the annoying thing was the hose pushing the hat down on my face. I did find that it could get warm under the shroud if I was exerting myself. DEWALT DC740K-2 battery The air blowing in front of my face stayed cool but I would start to perspire around my neck and shoulders under the shroud. Over the course of the next few turning sessions I again tried to to wear the respirator and each time after a couple of hours I had to take it off. Maybe it's just these old bones. I also ran into a low battery situation when I left it for a week after using it for about 4 hours. Upon testing the airflow prior to using the respirator, the sitting around had caused the battery to drain and the flow was under the required lever. I had to forego using the respirator until the next day. DEWALT DC740KA battery

Accessories: Right after I completed this review I found a company, Airware America, that sells replacement parts for the Triton. In addition to the replacements they offer stick on overlays which can be used with the Triton as well as other facemasks. Since they are not made specifically for the Triton they don't fit perfectly, but they do fit well enough for use and should greatly extend the usable life of the faceshield. DEWALT DC740KZ battery

Conclusion:
Safety isn't free and the Triton Powered Respirator like most safety devices causes the user some inconveniences. Compared to a face shield it costs more, weighs more, is hotter to wear, and causes more fatigue. What you get in return is clean lungs, your sight, your hearing, and few less bumps on the noggin. That's a fair trade if you ask me. DEWALT DC742KA battery

I've been in contact with Triton USA and they assure me that a new more flexible hose with quick connect fittings is on the way. The current hose is the biggest problem with the respirator. If they can solve that issue and come up with a quicker/smarter way to charge the batteries or even package the batteries without the motor to reduce cost, then they will have a real winner here. What's in the box?
As you can see the Triton Powered Respirator comes in the familiar Triton orange just as the rest of their products. PANASONIC EY6220B battery The head piece includes an AS/NZS 1801 approved hard hat with integrated AS/NZS 1270 approved ear protectors and an AS/NZS 1337 approved face shield. The head piece also includes an integrated shroud to keep the dust out and the ducting for the filtered air. The waist belt mounted filter unit contains two AS/NZS 1716 approved dust filters and NiCad batteries. The other accessories are the instruction manual, air hose, air flow meter, and DC power transformer used for charging the batteries. All of this comes securely packaged in a foot and a half square box. PANASONIC EY6220D battery

The filter unit actually contains 3 filters. PANASONIC EY6225 battery Two internal filters which are rated to the Australian standard as P2 (Equivalent to the American N95 class) particulate filters which allow 1% of the particles below 1 micron to pass and will remove 95% particulates down to 0.3 micron. Triton also sells an additional filter called CIGWELD. This filter is used during welding operations. There is also a pre filter (photo at right) which snaps onto the bottom of the assembly and should catch all the big stuff and keep it out of the motor assembly. In the three pictures above you can see the assembly with all the filters removed. The photo at left is looking straight down into the assembly. The two yellow things are D sized NiCad batteries which are soldered in place. The middle picture is with the pre-filter removed and looking at the bottom of the assembly. You can see the impeller just above the nameplate and the power switch on the left. The photo at right is again looking through the top but this time at an angle to expose the impeller motor. The last thing I want to show you before we move on to the headgear is the flow meter. This is simply a clear plastic tube with a captive ball and a target (this brings back some memories of tuning the carburetors on my MG). The way it works is that you attach the meter to the output of the filter and if the ball is in the target circle then all is well. The entire headgear is very well put together and is of high quality with the same excellent fit and finish I've come to expect from Triton products. The ear protectors swing out of the way (as pictured) but are not recommended for removal because they will leave a hole in the shroud. They adjust up and down so that you can get a comfortable fit. I could not adjust them up enough so that they were not sitting on my ear lobes and I could not see a way to modify either the muffs or the headgear harness to allow for a comfortable fit. The webbing in the hat was similar to every hard hat I've seen. There is a ratcheting adjustment in the rear which adjusts for head size. Depending on how big your head is, the knob can interfere with the air inlet on the back of the hat (photo right is after the adjustment below). Looking at the plastic headband I noticed an extra set of holes just behind the sweat band (photo left). This adjustment will move the part of the headband which goes behind your head, and houses the ratchet adjustment towards the front. The respirator operates by sucking air through the pre-filter at the bottom of the filter assembly and blowing that air at through the cartridge filters and up into the hard hat at 130 liters per minute. The air enters the back of the hat and is ducted over your head where it is exhausted just at the edge of the headband. The air is directed over the inside of the face shield. Batteries: When you receive and unpack your respirator the first thing you need to do is to plug in your battery pack to charge it up. One of the negatives about the Triton is that while the pack lasts up to 8 hours (in my three battery life tests it lasted between 7 and 8 hours) it takes at least over night to charge. The first time you charge it they instruct you to let it charge for 15 hours. Another battery related issue is that you can't just buy another set of NiCad's for it, you must buy the battery pack for around $80 which includes not only the batteries but also the whole motor assembly. A recommendation I will make to Triton is to have replaceable batteries so that we can purchase an extra "D" sized NiCad's and have them in an inexpensive charger, ready to go. In the current configuration, another needed feature is a smarter charger. The current charging system is simply a user timed event. Additionally if you leave the charger on longer than 72 hours you will damage the batteries. PANASONIC EY3790B battery What is needed is a smart charger which charges the batteries and then reverts to a trickle charge so that the pack can be plugged in and left alone where it will be ready to go whenever you need it. With the long charging times and the instructions to not use the battery pack if the air flow has dropped, I found myself on at least two occasions needing the respirator, but unable to use it because it failed the flow test. When that happened, a fully charged pack was at least 15 hours away. PANASONIC EY3794B battery

All that being said, with a fully charged pack I could get the stated life out of the filter and it worked well. Also, if one was using the pack every day charging would be less of an issue because you could simply plug it in when you were done for the day and it would be ready for you in the morning. The photo at left shows the filter pack being flow tested. Since NiCads put out a constant voltage right up until they are just about discharged, the flow will stay within the target throughout the charge until all of a sudden when it dramatically reduces. Use: While turning a piece with both eye and head protection I must admit I felt very secure wearing the respirator. Breathing the fresh air was an added bonus. There was a little distortion of my peripheral vision caused by the bubble face shield but looking straight on was fine. DEWALT DC727VA battery I had just begun turning some spindles for a cradle and things were progressing well. I had 35 of these to turn. About an hour and a half into the session my neck was getting stiff...the weight of the respirator the culprit. Standing relatively still with my head in about the same position spindle after spindle was taking it's toll. I removed the respirator and replaced it with my face shield and I immediately felt better. DEWALT DC727KA-B2 battery

Working around the rest of the shop was much better. I was able to perform all sorts of other tasks without a problem. Again the annoying thing was the hose pushing the hat down on my face. I did find that it could get warm under the shroud if I was exerting myself. DEWALT DC740K-2 battery The air blowing in front of my face stayed cool but I would start to perspire around my neck and shoulders under the shroud. Over the course of the next few turning sessions I again tried to to wear the respirator and each time after a couple of hours I had to take it off. Maybe it's just these old bones. I also ran into a low battery situation when I left it for a week after using it for about 4 hours. Upon testing the airflow prior to using the respirator, the sitting around had caused the battery to drain and the flow was under the required lever. Accessories: Right after I completed this review I found a company, Airware America, that sells replacement parts for the Triton. In addition to the replacements they offer stick on overlays which can be used with the Triton as well as other facemasks. Since they are not made specifically for the Triton they don't fit perfectly, but they do fit well enough for use and should greatly extend the usable life of the faceshield. DEWALT DC740KZ battery

Conclusion:
Safety isn't free and the Triton Powered Respirator like most safety devices causes the user some inconveniences. Compared to a face shield it costs more, weighs more, is hotter to wear, and causes more fatigue. What you get in return is clean lungs, your sight, your hearing, and few less bumps on the noggin. That's a fair trade if you ask me. DEWALT DC742KA battery

I've been in contact with Triton USA and they assure me that a new more flexible hose with quick connect fittings is on the way. The current hose is the biggest problem with the respirator. If they can solve that issue and come up with a quicker/smarter way to charge the batteries or even package the batteries without the motor to reduce cost, then they will have a real winner here. What's in the box?
As you can see the Triton Powered Respirator comes in the familiar Triton orange just as the rest of their products. PANASONIC EY6220B battery The head piece includes an AS/NZS 1801 approved hard hat with integrated AS/NZS 1270 approved ear protectors and an AS/NZS 1337 approved face shield. The head piece also includes an integrated shroud to keep the dust out and the ducting for the filtered air. The waist belt mounted filter unit contains two AS/NZS 1716 approved dust filters and NiCad batteries. The other accessories are the instruction manual, air hose, air flow meter, and DC power transformer used for charging the batteries. The filter unit actually contains 3 filters. PANASONIC EY6225 battery Two internal filters which are rated to the Australian standard as P2 (Equivalent to the American N95 class) particulate filters which allow 1% of the particles below 1 micron to pass and will remove 95% particulates down to 0.3 micron. Triton also sells an additional filter called CIGWELD. This filter is used during welding operations. There is also a pre filter (photo at right) which snaps onto the bottom of the assembly and should catch all the big stuff and keep it out of the motor assembly. In the three pictures above you can see the assembly with all the filters removed. The photo at left is looking straight down into the assembly. The two yellow things are D sized NiCad batteries which are soldered in place. The middle picture is with the pre-filter removed and looking at the bottom of the assembly. This is simply a clear plastic tube with a captive ball and a target (this brings back some memories of tuning the carburetors on my MG).
