Our test device was faced with the usual PCMark 7 and PCMark Vantage programs. However, the latter did not detect the GPU in Asus' S56CM even after several attempts and thus did not provide a score for the system performance. PCMark 7 did not record top system performance rates for Asus' ultrabook. The bottleneck is found in the i5 ULV CPU, which cannot compete with stronger standard voltage processors as well as the now somewhat obsolete 5400 rpm HDD from Hitachi that would naturally be clearly defeated by a swift SSD. Zur Einordnung des Notebooks ziehen wir die Konkurrenten MSI CR41-587 (Core i5-3210M, HD Graphics 4000) und Acer Aspire V5-471G (Core i5-3317U, GeForce GT 620M) heran. Beide Modelle sind nicht mit einem Touchscreen ausgestattet. Wir wählen diese Notebooks, da der Touchscreen in unseren Augen nicht mehr als eine nette Zugabe darstellt. Zudem finden sich aktuell keine 14-Zoll-Touchscreen-Notebooks mit Standard-CPU zu Preisen unterhalb von 800 Euro am Markt. Bei den verfügbaren Modellen mit Touchscreen handelt es sich um Ultrabooks oder um Standard-Notebooks, die mit ULV-Hardware bestückt sind. Als Beispiele hierfür seien das Sony Vaio SV-T1312V1ES (750 bis 800 Euro), das HP Envy TouchSmart 4-1102sg (800 bis 900 Euro) und das Asus Vivobook S400CA (650 bis 700 Euro) genannt. Die Baseunit hinterlässt einen soliden Eindruck. So gibt die Oberseite auf Druck kaum nach, lediglich links und rechts der Tastatur lässt sie sich ein wenig eindrücken. Leider kann man die Baseunit etwas zu leicht verwinden, wenn man sie an den vorderen Ecken greift. Dabei entsteht ein Knarzgeräusch. Der Deckel zeigt sich dank der Aluminiumrückseite deutlich stabiler: Er lässt sich kaum verwinden. Allerdings kann er in der Mitte der Rückseite so stark eingedrückt werden, dass man Bildveränderungen auf dem Display erkennt. Das Vaio ist mit den heute üblichen Anschlüssen ausgestattet und gleicht damit seinem Vorgänger. Auch das CR41 und das Aspire haben keine anderen Schnittstellen zu bieten als die beiden Sony Notebooks. Sehr schön: Alle vier Notebooks besitzen mindestens einen USB-3.0-Anschluss. Betriebssystem und Recovery
Unser Testgerät wurde mit vorinstalliertem Windows 8 (64 Bit) ausgeliefert. Eine Windows DVD liegt nicht bei. Mit Hilfe des Windows 8 Recoverysystems könnte das Betriebssystem auf den Auslieferungszustand zurückgesetzt oder im Falle eines Defektes auch repariert werden. Asus unterstützt neben Windows 8 auch Windows 7. Alle nötigen Treiber für beide Betriebssysteme können von der Asus Webseite heruntergeladen werden. Auch Anhänger des Linux Betriebssystems können mit dem X55U etwas anfangen. Wir haben testweise Ubunu Linux 13.04 installiert. Sofort nach der Installation haben fast alle Hardwarekomponenten funktioniert - inklusive WLAN-Modul und Funktionstasten (z. B. Helligkeits- und Lautstärkeregulierung). Wartung
Nach Entfernung der Wartungsklappe hat man Zugriff auf den Arbeitsspeicher, die Festplatte und das WLAN-Modul. Der Lüfter ist nicht zugänglich. Der Rechner ist mit einer Arbeitsspeicherbank ausgestattet, die mit einem Vier-Gigabyte-Modul belegt ist. Laut der Asus Webseite werden auch nur maximal 4 GB unterstützt. Eine zweite Speicherbank würde dem X55U nicht viel bringen. Der Speichercontroller der AMD APU unterstützt nur den Single-Channel-Modus. Die APUs der AMD-A-Serie und Prozessoren von Intel unterstützen auch den Dual-Channel-Modus, wodurch CPU und GPU besser ausgereizt werden und mehr Leistung bringen. This is becoming especially interesting in combination with Windows 8, whereby the tiled layout design has been specifically conceived for touch control. One thing that stands out hereby is the precise control with which most targets are immediately struck. The only point of criticism in this case is the slight teetering of the display which can be brought about by touch entry. Due to this it is not always easy to perform a double-click command. Fortunately the tiled design doesn't require this any longer, while smaller symbols on a traditional desktop could be the cause of some difficulty. Wer sich mit niedrigen Details und einer Auflösung von maximal 1.024 x 768 Pixeln zufrieden gibt, kann dennoch viele aktuelle Spiele mehr oder weniger flüssig genießen. Im Leerlauf und bei alltäglicher Nutzung, beispielsweise dem Surfen im Internet, schaltet sich der Lüfter meist vollständig ab oder arbeitet mit so geringer Drehzahl, dass der Anwender dessen minimales Rauschen kaum wahrnehmen wird. Obwohl Lenovo keine besonders sparsame ULV-CPU verbaut hat, bleibt das X230T auch unter Volllast akustisch im Hintergrund. Im 3DMark 06 ist das ThinkPad mit 32,9 dB(A) kaum lauter als manch anderes Notebook im Officebetrieb. Beim Thema Wärmeentwicklung merkt man dem Convertible durchaus an, dass hier potente Komponenten in ein relativ kompaktes Gehäuse integriert wurde. Bewegen sich die Oberflächentemperaturen im Leerlauf noch um etwa 30 °C, wird insbesondere die Unterseite bei starker Belastung sehr heiß. Wer nun vermutet, dass auch der Prozessor mit übermäßiger Erwärmung zu kämpfen hat, irrt allerdings: Auch nach einstündiger Belastung mit Prime95 und FurMark klettert die Kerntemperatur des Core i5 auf maximal 80 °C – zulässig wären laut Hersteller bis zu 105 °C. Die Qualität der internen Lautsprecher genießt bei einem Business-Gerät traditionell keine besonders hohe Priorität. Das X230T bildet hier keine Ausnahme: Fehlende Bässe, eine nur mäßige Maximallautstärke und ein flacher, volumenloser Sound kennzeichnen die Wiedergabe. Immerhin hat Lenovo darauf geachtet, dass die im Displayrahmen befindlichen Boxen auch im Tablet-Betrieb ungehindert abstrahlen können. Thanks to the silent SSD the notebook is silent when not under any load. The measurement of 28 dB(A) in this scenario equates to the same as the background noise of a quiet room. While under medium load the noise level increases to 35.3 dB(A) and finally reaches a clearly audible level of 44.2 dB(A) in our stress test. The manufacturer has a big problem with the processor. When more than one core is in use, the clock of the A8-4555M is temporarily reduced from the standard 1.6 GHz to a meager 900 MHz. Our measurements show that the throttling can have a massive impact on the performance. We checked the energy settings repeatedly (Windows control panel and AMD drivers) and the results with the second review unit were too low as well. The low CPU performance is the weakest point of the subnotebook. The Cinebench R11.5 score is very low with 0.42 points for the single-core rendering and 0.78 points for multi-core rendering. The already mentioned Core i5-2537M is more than 100% faster with 0.9 and 1.93 points (Samsung Series 5 530U4C-S02). If we have a look at the Lenovo IdeaPad S405 we can see that the A8-4555M without throttling and a higher turbo margin achieves 0.57 points (+36%) and 1.24 points (+59%). We can only hope Asus fixes the problem with the clocks as soon as possible. ASUS K55DR Battery
The VivoBook U38DT has two DirectX 11 graphics accelerators. The Radeon HD 7600G (Terascale-3 architecture) is integrated into the CPU and has a different clock than the bigger Radeon HD 7660G with only 320-424 instead of 497-686 MHz. "Maximum Power" represents the HD 8550M, "Energy Saving" stands for the HD 7600G. You can also change the global settings. GPU Performance
The performance of the AMD graphics very much depends on the requirements of the application being used. The higher the CPU influence, the higher is the limiting factor of the throttling A8-4555M.
The subnotebook handles the 3DMark 11 (1280x720, "Performance Preset") quite well. With a GPU score of 1,307 points the Radeon HD 8550M is on the same level as the GeForce GT 640M LE (1,259 points @ Fujitsu LifeBook AH532) or Radeon HD 7690M XT (1,346 points @ HP Pavilion dv7-6c07eg). Der HP Envy dv7-7202eg besitzt eine Chiclet-Tastatur mit Tasten aus mattem, schwarzen Kunststoff und einer Kantenlänge von 14 Millimetern, wobei der Tastenabstand 3 Millimeter beträgt. Die Tasten überzeugen mit einem mittleren Tastenhub, einem klaren Druckpunkt und erzeugen ein angenehm leises, zu keiner Zeit "klappriges" Tippgeräusch. Die ansonsten sehr fest sitzende Tastatur gibt lediglich zwischen Haupttastaturfeld und Nummernfeld etwas nach, was insgesamt zwar nicht störend ins Gewicht fällt und sich nur bei festerem Druck zeigt, doch angesichts des stolzen Preises von rund 1200 Euro sollte das eigentlich nicht vorkommen. Touchpad
Wie schon beim Voränger Envy dv6-7202eg sitzt das multitouchfähige Touchpad des Envy dv7 in einer Mulde und wird von einem silbernen Rahmen umfasst, bietet wegen des größeren Formfaktors mit Abmessungen von 105 x 55 Millimetern jedoch mehr Fläche. Gleich geblieben ist dagegen die gute Bedienung: Die glatte Oberfläche des Touchpads ermöglicht ein angenehmes Arbeiten mit dem Notebook und lässt sich optional über einen Schalter in der rechten oberen Ecke ein- und ausschalten. Während der HP-Vorgänger noch mit Touchpad-Unverträglichkeiten zwischen Windows 8 und einzelnen Anwendungen wie HWinfo zu kämpfen hatte, ist beim Envy dv7-7202eg davon nichts mehr zu bemerken. Das HP Envy dv7-7202eg verfügt über ein mattes, 17,3 Zoll großes Display mit LED-Hintergrundbeleuchtung, das nativ 1.920 x 1.080 Bildpunkte darstellt. Obwohl das HP EliteBook 2760p auch heute noch mit seinem tollen Gehäuse besticht, kann es in vielen anderen Bereichen nicht mehr mit der aktuellen Konkurrenz mithalten. Bei der Schnittstellenausstattung fehlen wichtige Standards wie DisplayPort, eSATA oder USB 3.0. Die Leistungskomponenten wie Prozessor und Grafikeinheit hinken einer ganzen Generation hinterher und dürften bei einem aktuellen EliteBook eigentlich keine Verwendung mehr finden. Das wird leistungsmäßig im Alltagsbetrieb zwar gut durch das flotte Solid State Drive ausgeglichen, ein gewichtiger Nachteil gegenüber der aktualisierten Konkurrenz ist es dennoch. Die Akkulaufzeit erreicht mit dem Standard-Akku in der Praxis etwa 3 Stunden und kann daher bestenfalls als durchschnittlich bezeichnet werden. Weitere Kleinigkeiten wie die antiquierte Tastaturbeleuchtung im Displayrahmen, das viel zu kleine Touchpad oder die mäßige VGA-Signalqualität sind Indizien dafür, dass eine grundlegende Überarbeitung mehr als überfällig ist.
Dennoch kann das HP EliteBook 2760p auch heute für manchen Anwender genau die richtige Lösung sein. Systemleistung, Akkulaufzeit, Displayqualität und Verarbeitungsniveau sind durchaus Eigenschaften, die überzeugen. Vor allem das sehr wertige Gehäuse mit seinen soliden Metalloberflächen und Schiebeschaltern ist in der Lage, die Vernunft ein wenig auszuschalten und vielleicht doch eher der emotionalen Seite des Herzens den Vorzug zu geben. Das umfangreiche Zubehörprogramm, die gute Kompatibilität zu den Vorgängermodellen, die komfortablen Wartungs- und Aufrüstungsmöglichkeiten und die wichtigen Business-Features sprechen jedoch auch den vernunftorientierten Teil des potentiellen Käufers an. Ob das letztlich reicht, entscheiden die persönlichen Vorlieben und Bedürfnisse der potentiellen Käufer und der Preis von knapp 1500 Euro.
